Dozo Japanese Restaurant in London

This restaurant is An Old Compton Street Japanese from the group behind the more current Viet Food.

This is among 2 Dozos in London (the other is in South Kensington), and it originates from a group that has just opened the doors to Viet Food– an impressive new Vietnamese addition to Chinatown. Dozo costs itself as a ‘Japanese fine dining restaurant,’ though our experience is limited to the more value-orientated lunchtime offerings.

Bento boxes, sushi, ramen, and donburi sets– most with miso soup and a little salad consisted of– are priced at an exceptionally sensible ₤ 6.90. We enjoyed functional sushi and sashimi, plus a big bowl of chili beef ramen, with excellent depth to the stock and various meat, veg, noodles, and garnish. A reasonable number of the tables around us had Japanese occupants, which should state something.

Dozo’s seating is definitely worth a mention. It’s zashiki-style (traditionally, low tables with restaurants sitting on the flooring); however, here there’s space listed below the table into which legs can swing. It’s a concession that’s handy for Western limbs less at ease with the lotus position; however, still not without its troubles– don’t be amazed to see a couple of unexpected down pet dogs from less nimble diners.

Service traveled from the company (we were advised for stepping too far over the breach on arrival) to the sweet (a smiling ‘thank you’ and the door held open as we left). The only genuine gripe was edamame delivered well after our mains hit the table– high as they were, a dessert they do not make.

With such good value at lunch, Dozo is a single place to advise. As long your limbs can twist for those tables– or you’re prepared to leave your self-respect at the door. Woof woof.
